Qualifying for the 2009 municipal election ended today at 4:30 p.m.

Here is what we know:

Gainesville School Board will have two contested races.  David Syfan will face Kellie Weeks for Ward 1 and Kelvin Simmons will face Delores Diaz and Richard Lacey for Ward 4.  Kellie may have a leg up if voters realize that Syfan helped rubber stamp Ballowe’s budget crisis.

In related news, Simmons qualification has been challenged since his wife serves in the school system as an Assistant Principal.  If this is true, Diaz will be the front runner.  She is a former art teacher with Doctorate degree in education.

Gainesville City Council

No one is challenging incumbents Danny Dunagan or George Wangeman.

Flowery Branch City Council

This looks to be an excitingly dull race.  There are three city wide post open and each post has 2 candidates.  Here is the funny thing 2 are from Sterling on the Lake and the other 4 or from Tide Water Cove.  Didn’t this city try having just one subdivision rule the city back in 2000.  Ask Bryan Puckette how well that worked.  By the way, neither of the three incumbents qualified.

Now that is change we can believe in.
