The American Nurses Association supports the current healthcare reform efforts and has created a website with a tool kit for nurses.

The kit includes the follow letter to be sent to each Congressman. Brain surgeons never argue with their nurses. Neither should Congress.

The Letter

I am writing to request that you support health care reform legislation that includes a strong public plan and guarantees quality, affordable health care for everyone. As one of the nation’s 2.9 million nurses, I see firsthand how important access to affordable quality health care is. As the number of uninsured Americans continues to grow at an alarming rate, the only place the uninsured can get treated is in the emergency room, which is often the most expensive form of immediate care. This creates a huge strain on the health care system and its providers.

Now is the time for health care reform. I share the American Nurses Association’s belief that in order to meet our nation’s health care needs we must have an integrated and well resourced national healthcare workforce policy, a system that focuses on wellness and prevention, and a high-quality public insurance option that complements and competes fairly with options offered by private insurers.

I believe that health care reform must happen this year and I join the ANA in their push for meaningful health care reform that includes a strong public option. I look forward to your reply.
